Reading a result

A team batting first wins “by runs” – the difference between the two totals. A team chasing wins “by wickets” – the number of wickets it still had in hand. Rain-affected limited-overs games are decided by the DLS method, and tied T20 matches go to a Super Over.

Questions and answers

What does “won by 6 wickets” mean?

The chasing team reached its target with six wickets still in hand – only four batters were out.

Duckworth-Lewis-Stern is the system used to set revised targets when rain shortens a limited-overs match, based on the overs and wickets each side had available.

About women’s cricket results

Results list the latest completed women’s matches with the final score of both teams and the official result: the winner and the margin, a tie, a no result or a draw in Tests.

How margins work

A side that bats first and defends its total wins by runs. A side that chases successfully wins by the number of wickets it still had standing. Tied limited-overs matches in knockouts are usually settled by a Super Over.

Rain and DLS

When weather cuts overs from an ODI or T20, the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method adjusts the target to reflect the resources – overs and wickets – each team had available. Results decided this way say “DLS method”.
